Losing a limb can be a life-altering experience that can impact a person's physical and emotional well-being. Adjusting to life with a prosthesis can be a challenging journey, but it's essential to stay positive and maintain confidence. At times, it may seem like an insurmountable task, but with the right mindset and support system, you can learn to overcome the obstacles and embrace your new reality. The Durrett’s Orthotics & Prosthetics team has tips to help you stay confident with a prosthesis.
Acknowledging your limb loss and moving forward is an individual process. Each person has a variety of factors at play in their lives, which will impact coping with the change in your life. Focusing on what you can do and having realistic expectations for yourself will make a big difference. Remember that you’re not doing anything “right” or “wrong” in your journey to stay confident during this transition.
When you lose a physical part of your body, it can be easy to feel like you are no longer the same person. Even with the help of a prosthesis, you will look and feel differently. It’s so important to remember that having a prosthesis or limb difference does not define you. Your history and accomplishments, your values, your memories and relationships with loved ones; these are things that cannot be taken.
Keep a circle of friends and family who will challenge and encourage you. Empathy and necessary accommodations are important, but expectations for you are just as vital. Let the people around you know what you need to help you recover and get back to feeling like yourself. If you can do something for yourself that is currently being done by others, speak up. Your support system should never make you feel incapable.
Doing something you love is a great way to maintain and increase your confidence. Feeling productive and having a sense of purpose helps many people jump back into their daily lives. A prosthesis makes many things possible, including going to work, cleaning your house, and taking a walk. Returning to work and play will help you recover faster, physically and emotionally.
Being kind to yourself and others will significantly increase your self-confidence. The things we tell ourselves matter, so say kind things. Being able to positively impact another person’s day with acts or words of kindness can also contribute to you feeling better about yourself.
